As we know, drill cuttings are generated during the drilling process, and may cause serious environmental damage. Following well completion, reserve pits (used for storage of efficient mud systems) are often left in place after the drilling rig and other equipment are removed from the site. The composition of drilling fluids may contain chemical agents that are harmful to health or to the environment, and they should be disposed together with the drill cuttings.

Drilling waste disposal may be applied by different methods.  Advanced basic drilling waste disposal practices include chemical disposal, bio-treatment, physical disintegration, physical or chemical-and-physical treatment, and thermal incineration.

Please note, that the drilling wastes disposal problems are thoroughly analyzed and studied, and environmental engineers offer different solutions for further improvement of drilling wastes disposal process, thus making it safe for the environment.

For example, processed drill cuttings are quite actively used to manufacture environment-friendly pavement slabs and tiles, or to build roads.


Drilling processes generate large volumes of drill cuttings, which should be disposed or recycled in a proper manner. Also, different chemicals and additives are actively used during the drilling process to mix and to condition drilling fluids and mud, which are often stored on the location, thus threatening to health and environment. That's why they should be properly disposed. 

Drill cuttings containing oil and hydrocarbons are extremely hazardous for soil and environment. Soil contaminated with such wastes and chemicals may seriously damage root systems and possibly kill plants.  Soil self-purification processes could be rather slow, so it is very critical to properly dispose oil contaminated drill cuttings and other drilling wastes.

Drill cuttings disposal methods

Modern drill cuttings disposal practices are represented by different methods.

Bio-disposal of drill cuttings

Method of bioremediation, or biological treatment, is a natural decomposition process, where microorganisms are used to biologically degrade drill cuttings.  The biotreatment process is facilitated by maintaining appropriate temperature.  After the decomposition process is complete, the residual wastes shall be disposed and buried in the dedicated disposal site under appropriate state regulations. It is important to note that such disposal will not cause any damage to environment.   

Thermal disposal of drill cuttings

In this case, drill cuttings are disposed at very high temperatures in special incinerators.

Chemical disposal of drill cuttings

Chemical disposal methods involve different chemicals and additives, which disintegrate or harden drill cuttings, thus making them safe for the environment.

Physical disposal of drill cuttings

The disposal technique is based on centrifugal forces.

Please note, that drill cuttings should be disposed in special locations with respect to the appropriate disposal procedures performed by experienced and skilled specialists.
